Astronaut z 20. století se stává největším hrdinou Země v budoucnosti… V roce 1987 testuje kapitán Air Force, William „Buck“ Rogers, raketoplán Ranger 3. Kapitánův let má trvat pouze 5 měsíců, ale zásah meteoritu do raketoplánu poškozí životně důležité podpůrné systémy raketoplánu a jeho zmrazí. Raketoplán je naveden na oběžnou dráhu Země, kde krouží bez povšimnutí. Na Zem se vrátí až za 500 let. Země se mezitím zotavuje z jaderné války, ale to nejtěžší má teprve přijít. Země je napadena vesmírnými nepřátely z Drakonické říše. Buck Rogers je rozmražen, aby se stal hrdinou a zachránil Zemi před vetřelci…
